A Reasonable Man

A murdered child, an evil spirit, and a lawyer trying to prove a man is innocent when both men are uncertain.

Set in South Africa after its liberation from apartheid, this is the story of a child's murder and the African culture that surrounds and shapes the outcome of the event. It contrasts European notions of law and justice with the customs and myths of ancient Africa in an unsettling and surprising way. A tense courtroom trial provides the stage for these very different views of reality.

Superbly acted and directed, A Reasonable Man gives unusual insights into present day South Africa and the struggle to reconcile the burdens of its past traditions with the realities of modern life in a country still trying to identify itself. An all South African cast includes the well-known Nigel Hawthorne (The Madness of King George). This film is a thought-provoking investigation of human morality and culture.
